Everyone has that one Halloween that just seems to creep up on them (no pun intended) where you find yourself without a costume. Well, we are here to help make life a little easier for you during this struggle with some simple and easy costumes you can fashion from your own wardrobe! Sure, they might not be the most original costumes ever, but they work in a pinch! Check out these easy looks and start searching your closet now!

Every woman can make this costume happen! We all have that classic little black dress and black heels. And if you don't already own a strand of pearls you can find them just about anywhere in a wide price range. May not be the most original costume, but when you're in a pinch this will always work!

Dress: Nothing To Lose Black Scallop Shift Dress
Necklace: Layered Faux Pearl Necklace
Earrings: Faux Pearl Stud Set
Heels: Her Strut Black Ankle Strap Heels

A little more unique, this scarecrow costume can be put together with any plaid shirt, boots, and a hat. Most of us already have those items in our closet! Add some cute boots and carry around some flowers to finish off this costume!

Plaid Shirt: Accidentally In Love Plaid Blouse
Jeans: Here I Go Again Distressed Denim Jeans
Straw Hat: Monogrammed Wide Derby Hat
Boots: Tan Travelin' Soldier Lace Up Boots
Flowers: Gerber Daisy Stems

No one will have to ask what you are this Halloween when you show up in this! Just take an old white tank top and cut holes in the chest and throw it over any purple bra with a black skirt and heels and boom, you're Regina George! Everyone will want to be just as cute and clever as you this Halloween!

Sports Bra: Gaiam Bra: Shine Wire-Free Low-Impact Yoga Sports Bra
Tank Top: Long And Lean Tank
Skirt: Classic Skater Skirt
Heels: Her Strut Black Ankle Strap Heels

The 70's are coming back so many of you already have a lot of items in your closet with this motif in mind. So just throw on your most psychedelic top, some bell bottoms, and fringe and you're ready to go!

Paisley Top: Accidentally In Love Paisley Blouse
Bell Bottoms: All Shook Up High Rise Bell Bottom Jeans
Booties: Fray With Me Now Beige Tassel Booties
Necklace: Brinley Co. Women's Sterling Silver Peace Sign Pendant Fashion Necklace
Earrings: Clear Triangle Earrings

This costume is always a hit! Tie that white button up top of yours, roll up the sleeves of your sweater, and pull those knee high socks up high. Finish off the look with pigtail braids and scrunchies and you're ready to "Hit me baby, one more time!"

Collar Shirt: Women's Button Down Shirt
Cardigan: Jacquard Boyfriend Cardigan
Sports Bra: Gaiam Bra: Shine Wire-Free Low-Impact Yoga Sports Bra
Skirt:  Classic Skater Skirt
Knee Socks: Cable Knit Over-The-Knee Socks
Scruncheis: Ditsy Floral Scrunchie Set
Flats: Women's Odell Ballet Flat

By far the simplest costume you can be this Halloween! People may not get it at first when they see you walk in the door, but as soon as you hit your emoji girl poses they will know who you are and think you're quite clever! And lets face it, we all have a pink long sleeve shirt somewhere in our closet!

Shirt: Champion Tee
Jeans: Forever In Dark Wash Jeans

So what costume can you make out of your closet? We'd love to hear so let us know!

a bottle of wine or flowers is always a nice hostess gift, but sometimes it's fun to do something a little different. we recently attended a couples shower for our friends casey and david and it was the perfect occasion to bake my pumpkin bread. since the recipe makes three loaves, I decided to share one of the loaves as a hostess gift. all you have to do is pick up a festive dishtowel (this one is from target) and that's pretty much the extent of the extra effort, provided you have parchment paper and twine already.

1. fold your dishtowel in half and place loaf in the center of towel.

2. place parchment paper on the loaf so that the dishtowel does not touch the bread. this will help to keep the bread free from fibers in the towel and also help to keep the towel clean so the recipient can use it without having to wash it first.

3. fold the towel over the top of the parchment paper and tie with twine or ribbon and voila!

The thing with college is that no matter how many things to read or watch beforehand, you’ll never truly know what to expect. Everyone has a unique and individualized experience every step of the way.
Why, then, am I writing this post? Just to give you some insight onto what I’ve learned so far and what I’ve seen to be true. These things might not apply to you either now or in your future college career, but regardless, I wanted to provide some sort of update on my end!
One thing I can tell you (that I hope is a universal thing): college is way better than high school. The schedule is better (albeit way harder to balance) and you get to meet all new people all the time – in high school, being stuck with people you’ve see around since Kindergarten got old very fast.
So far I’ve been loving college, but a cost of that is having to cut down time to work on this blog. I absolutely love The Fashion Newcomer and would never just abruptly abandon it (but throwback to that April Fool’s Day post…). So even if you don’t see things coming from me on a regular basis, know I’m human and trying to figure out how to balance everything!
Your sleep cycle will become irregular | In high school, I tried not to go to bed later than 11:30pm/12am (and that was at the latest during senior year). Now, I’m on a completely different schedule, particularly because my classes are later in the day so I never have to wake up at 6am. This is a blessing and a curse; my days start later (sometimes I feel as if I’ve wasted time), but I can do a lot more work at night and not have to worry about waking up in a few short hours (I’m pretty productive at night!).
Look for people who share same values as you, but have different interests | My friends here have all discussed how different we are – we all participated in different activities in high school, and have different outlooks on a lot of things. At the end of the day, we all have the same morals and are all pushing towards success. These things create a cohesive and supportive group that I am so lucky to be a part of.
Don’t ever get discouraged, just keep working harder | If ever stressed or overloaded, take a deep breath, and keep working. Don’t let anything deter you from your academic goals (if you have them) – push on and get ahead. Although it is easier said than done, cracking down is necessary – making to do lists, creating mini rewards, and separating yourself from distractions is the best way to ensure your own personal success. If you do need a real stress reliever, I recommend a session of zumba: fun, still productive (fighting the freshman 15!), and gets your juices flowing.
Athletic clothes are 100% acceptable at any time | In high school, I truly hated wearing leggings to school. In fact, I rarely ever did it. In college, it’s a whole different ball game. First and foremost, sometimes I go through 3 outfits in a day just depending upon what’s going on. The days when I have nothing going on, I throw on leggings, and if I want to look more together (it really doesn’t take much more effort), jeans. It’s completely acceptable to wear whatever you want whenever you want – as long as you are comfortable and happy, that’s what counts!
Take things at your own pace | Moving to college is a adjustment, so take everything at your own pace. Everyone has a different tolerance for various things, so don’t push yourself to do anything you know would drastically effect you negatively. You know yourself better than anyone else, and make sure to get the necessary sleep, rest, and nourishment you need to be successful.
Try to go home sometime in the stretch before Thanksgiving | My school doesn’t have a designated fall break, but luckily there was a long weekend in which I was able to go home before Thanksgiving. No matter what, I knew I would see my parents and brother as they were coming up for family weekend – but there is something about being home and in a comfortable environment that is so nice. I’m looking forward to going home not because I don’t like it here, but simply because I crave homemade food and being able to chill with my family in my house! Although familiarity can become a handicap, it is nice to be able to return to what you know from time to time.
Look for ways to switch up eating at the dining hall | This is a piece of advice I’ve been having a hard time taking myself. I’m getting so sick of the dining hall food and I don’t quite know what to do! I bought Campbell’s K-Cups and some amazing oatmeal (post on dorm room snacking/food to come soon!), but other than that, it is very hard to gain massive variation. The food here is not amazing, and it’s hard on a daily basis to find something I know I’ll definitely enjoy.
Generally, say yes more than you say no | I’m unsure as to whether or not this is something I’ve been following, but I think it’s a good rule of thumb. College presents so many opportunities, and although you may be over scheduled and exhausted, sometimes you need to say yes, get out there, and experience new things. (Although do know your limits and don’t push yourself too far!!)

Puffer vests have been one of my favorite things to wear during the fall for the last few years. They're perfect for when it's chilly but I don't want to wear a jacket, and I also love them as extra layer of warmth under my giant coat for subzero temps in the winter! Luckily, since I'm graduating early I'll be avoiding another northern winter. But I know I will probably get a lot more wear out of my vests through the winter in NC. I wear them to class pretty often, and I am loving this neutral monogrammed one the Marley Lilly team was nice enough to send me for review!

The fleece lining of this vest is so nice and warm, which I haven't really seen in other vests. I do wish it was a little more fitted, it's kind of boxy when I zip it up. But other than that, it's pretty great! The zipper pull is a heart, which I think is too cute. It is available in several other colors and like all Marley Lilly products, you can choose just about any color and style monogram you like!

Marley Lilly quilted puffer vest c/o | J. Crew Factory striped sweater (old, similar) | J. Crew Factory necklace (old, similar) | 7 For All Mankind Roxanne jeans | Hunter gloss rain boots (adult version here, mine are the kid's size 4, see this post for more about the sizing)
Thanks for reading!
