The Monogrammed Life

When it comes to trying out new skincare products I am usually pretty hesitant. I've always had relatively good skin but college and the stress that comes with it makes it act out more so than it did in high school. I always love seeing what other people use but am slow to switch up my routine when it comes to trying different products. When seasons begin to change is when I am most likely to switch things up since it is likely that my skin needs something different progressing from winter to spring. I thought that it could be fun for me to share my typical night time skincare with y'all with hopes that you'll recommend some other products for me to try out!

1. I start by removing my eye makeup using this Neutrogena Eye Makeup remover. I use it with cotton rounds and prefer to do it before showering instead of after since I like to have all of the product washed off of my face. If I am traveling and don't want to travel with this bottle of liquid I also really like their wipes!

2. I shower at night so that is where I tend to wash my face. I start by using this St.Ives Apricot Exfoliating Scrub. Nothing special here, I just rub it between my hands and scrub it onto my face and then rinse!

3. Next I use my Clarisonic Mia with a bit St. Ives Even and Bright Face Wash on it. I have had my Clarisonic for a few years now and really love it!

4. Since my face does break out on occasion I like to have spot treatments on hand for when I need them. I have had multiple tubes of Clean and Clears Spot Treatment and like dabbing that onto problem areas of my face. The other option that I like that tends to work well is Mario Badescu's Drying Lotion. This one I use a q-tip to apply and then you leave a little pink spot on top of any blemishes that you want to dry out. This really helps any problem spots to disappear a bit quicker and one little container of it lasts a long time!

5. In the winter especially it is super important for me to remember to moisturize. On occasion I get these weird stress rashes on my legs and arms (glamorous, I know) and this First Aid Beauty Hydration Lotionis the best lotion I have found for that so far and it is also great to use on your face. It is incredibly moisturizing and perfect for sensitive skin.

6. Lastly I like to apply a bit of chapstick before bed to moisturize my lips. My favorite since this summer has been this Beauty Counter Lip Conditioner in peppermint. It leaves my lips feeling super soft and tastes good too!

What are your favorite skin care products?

Sweater // Denim // Boots (also obsessed with this new pink pair!) // Necklace // Bag // Bracelets // Watch

Happy Wednesday, y'all!  It has been a rainy past few days here...of course that's an excuse to pull out the Hunter Boots.  I had been wanting to shoot some photos in front of this old fire station for quite some time, and I figured this navy outfit would make it the perfect setting (I've always loved navy + red).  Also, this sweater is a new favorite of mine!  I love the fit, and the navy and white stripes with the fun fringe details makes it just perfect!

These photos were taken over the weekend, so you can't tell here, but I cut my hair yesterday!  If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen it.  I am so pleased with my decision!  It feels so much fuller and more workable.  I'm very excited to play around it.  I think it is going to be so much easier to handle.  Now, I'm looking for a great curling wand (preferably one where you can adjust the heat settings).  I'd love to hear some suggestions, if y'all have any!

I hope y'all are having a great week so far!
Delightfully Yours,

do you ever make a purchase because of something you saw on social media? whenever I do, I always laugh to myself since the impact of social media can be hard to quantify for brands or marketing agencies. I wish I could tell the brand or store "hey, it's working!" and "keep it up!" I guess that's the marketing nerd in me.

I usually clean up my patio around march or april and replant my window boxes... basically I get my patio all ready for cocktails on a warm day or early evening. I love having a drink with stephen after work on the patio. I keep thinking winter is over but as we did have snow recently, I think I'm just in denial. I am so ready for spring and I happened to see an instagram post from my local pike nursery about ornamental kale and cabbage, how they can be planted now and withstand the cold temperatures through spring. SOLD. while I may still need to wear a jacket outside, at least I can have a colorful patio already.

if you're local to the atlanta area, be sure to check out pike nurseries. a lot of the kale I picked was on sale which makes these cold-weathered beauties even better!

according to the garden helper, a light to moderate frost can even brighten the color of the ornamental kale. and while kale doesn't do well in extreme heat, it will last all through spring, which means I won't need to tend to my patio garden for quite some time.

When you live mainly in a single, tiny room, it is important to keep it clean. Throughout the first semester I have found a few things that help me keep my room clean and free of dirt and clutter.

-make your bed-
I will be the first to admit that I don't do this as often as I should, but it really helps make the room appear more put together and organized.

-use bins/organizers-
Use boxes and organizers to help things look neat and so you know exactly where things are.

-vacuum weekly-
When you are constantly coming and going, it is easy to track in leaves and dirt. And of course food crumbs and hair are always present as well, but by vacuuming once a week you can keep it clean.

-dust often-
For some reason my dorm is 10 times dustier than my room at home, so it is important to dust shelves often.

-make a bathroom cleaning schedule-
I live in a suite, which means that we have our own bathroom attached to our room and our suite mates room. We created a bathroom schedule so one of us cleans it every week, and it has worked out very well! The bathroom stays clean, and I only have to clean about once a month.

-wash bedding and towels regularly-
This is something that many college kids overlook, but even if they don't appear to be dirty it is important to keep them clean. Plus who doesn't love crawling into clean sheets?!

-keep dishes clean-
It is easy just to let dirty dishes pile up, but it's important to wash dishes as soon as they are dirty, or within a day or so. Nothing looks worse than having a pile of used dishes on your desk!

-pick up daily-
Even just a pair of shoes and a few notebooks on the floor can make a room look cluttered. Put things back where they belong and your room will look much more put together!

How do you keep your room clean? Share in the comments!

I’m not sure how applicable this post will be to anyone still in high school, but even then, there’s some take-aways (you can’t show up to your Honor Society induction or award ceremonies in jeans, right? On the other hand, you wouldn’t necessarily show up in a suit either…).
A little background (I seem to always jump in too far first): at college, I’m in an undergraduate business program. At orientation, we were told that upon the start of school that we needed to have a suit in our (teeny tiny, may I add) dorm room closets. I was the definition of the eyes wide open emoji – of course I imagined that I would need a suit at some point, but I certainly didn’t think that on the onset of freshman year it would be a necessity.
Fast forward to the end of first semester and I wore my suit SO many times. Interviews, job fair, club events, class presentations, case competitions, networking nights… The list goes on and on. It’s incredible how versatile two pieces can become, even if they aren’t your usual go-tos (think the business version of your favorite pair of jeans and the cute top you seem to repeat so often).
Interrupting the first few paragraphs with a nice look into my kitchen at home and me, in my business professional get up:
IMG_3217
Suit: Tahari via Macy’s, Turtleneck: Ann Taylor, Flats: DSW
Now lets go back to the summer (sorry for the time traveling in this post): after orientation, I started out on a hunt for business casual and business professional (suit) clothing. Long story made short: it was difficult! And not just the suit – shells to wear underneath, professional flats, not too uncomfortable heels, and other business casual pieces.
To continue with this post (as I’m writing this I realize I may have taken on more than I can chew with this topic), I’ve decided to break down some of the many dress codes in the business world.

dress code definitions decoded

Neat & Smart casual // For fashionistas, probably a casual outfit of yours – jeans, polished shirt, mature and nice shoes (I’d assume flip-flops are a no). Obviously this exact look will have to be tailored to the event you are going to; some events can be neat or smart casual more on the formal side, so definitely consult others and look to see if the company or organization hosting the event gave any instructions. Other options can include nicer tailored pants with a cardigan.
Business casual // My version of business casual is essentially business professional but not a matching suit. I typically like to go a bit fancier than what is required just incase, so I typically pair a fun (and by fun, I mean not just one solid color) blazer (the few I have are from Ann Taylor) with nice tailored black pants. In the summer, I tend to wear nice skirts or (typically) black dresses that are a bit more conservative in length. Feel free to wear skinny or trouser pants – whatever you are most comfortable in. Business casual definitely does vary; at the high school level, I would recommend a nice dress or even black jeans with a nice top. Again, keep in mind what the occasion is and that should guide you to which end of the spectrum you need to be on.
Business professional // No questions asked: a suit, probably in navy, gray, or black but there are some other options. I currently have two, one with a skirt as the bottom and one with trouser pants (as seen in the picture above). Having both is not necessary and both are acceptable for business professional. I have two simply because Binghamton can get extremely cold in the winter and although I could wear tights with the skirt, I figured having pants would be the smartest decision (especially if I have to walk across campus). Underneath the suit jacket, a professional shell is needed – this is a shirt made of a nicer material – look for simple and neutral colors and patterns, nothing that takes away from your professionalism. Above I’m wearing a fancier, ribbed turtleneck from Ann Taylor which also works.
For all of these looks (aside from, occasionally, neat/smart casual) you’ll need a pair of nice flats and heels (not too high) that pair well with your suit and tailored pants – this way you don’t have to buy multiple for each outfit. Key word with these shoes: simple, preferably black (depending upon your suit/pant color), and leather/patent leather. Brands such as Cole Haan, Vince Camuto, and Jessica Simpson typically have shoes that fit the bill.
Lastly, a nice bag – one that can hopefully fit your resume and a few other essentials is necessary.
Minimal jewelry is a smart choice – nothing too flashy – and simple makeup.
Here’s a summary of some business professional professional pieces (not necessarily sure they all pair together with the grey suit, but you get the gist).

I literally had a class in which we had to memorize these things, cold. Questions surrounding attire were on our midterm!

onto where to shop these things…

Ann Taylor is the best place to start – they have a wide range of sizes, colors, fits, and styles so you can see what looks good on you. Although expensive, the quality is truly amazing – but definitely look out for sales (fairly frequent) and try not to buy full price. If anything, Ann Taylor is great place to try on and get a sense of what business clothing looks like on you – from there, you can find similar items at a lower cost.
Macy’s can seem like a hidden gem, as on the outset, some of their suits/business clothing seemed a little gaudy and aged to me. However, Macy’s has some great picks from Tahari – I strolled in and got a whole pantsuit with leather trimming for $70! Amazing price. Search here for suits at the best price, and come armed with coupons – Macy’s always seems to have a slew available.
Department stores (Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, and Lord & Taylor were my go-tos) are great to find shoes. Again, look for sales and use coupons when applicable. Like I said above, Vince Camuto, Jessica Simpson, and Cole Haan are great for chic shoes that pair well with professional clothing. Sam Edelman also has some options – occasionally their shoes can be a bit funkier (great outside the business realm!) so be careful.
Are you still here? Cool. Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any more specific questions! As I wear more business oriented outfits, I’ll try to snap pictures to feature them on the blog (or update this post with specific outfit ideas, which I didn’t get a chance to photograph in time for the publication of this!).
Seriously though – if you are curious as to more about this aspect of college/undergraduate business at all, e-mail me jamie@thefashionnewcomer.com!

Since I have been in college for half a year now, I have found a few easy ways to be healthier and not always just choose fries for every meal. Today I wanted to share some of my favorite tips with you!

-take advantage of free classes-
During the month of January, my school offered quite a few free workout classes such as pilates, Zumba, and yoga. I ended up trying all of them, and it was a lot of fun to go with girls from my floor.

-find a gym buddy-
Try to find someone who can go to the gym at the same time as you and make sure you go together when you go. I am not saying you need to go every single day, but even just planning on going twice a week together is helpful!

-keep healthier snacks-
Try keeping yogurt, fruit, or vegetables in your room to snack on between meals instead of cookies.

-only eat the best desserts-
My school offers about 5 dessert options at every meal. Many of them actually aren't that good, and sometimes I will try something that looks good only to find it really is not that good. If you take a few bites and don't like it, don't feel like you have to eat the whole thing!

-bring a water bottle everywhere-
I always keep a water bottle in my backpack, and this means that I am able to keep hydrated in class. It is a super easy way to get enough water.

-drink water at meals-
At my school you can choose basically any soda or juice to drink at meals, but if you try to drink water at most meals it is better for you!

Here is my (a little more festive than yesterday) Valentine's Day look for the Gal Pal "Love Is In the Air" linkup hosted by Rachel, Cathleen, and Christina! I'm so excited for Valentine's Day this year because I will be spending it with my boyfriend for the first time. We started dating at the very end of high school in 2012, and we have always been many hours away from each other at our colleges on Valentine's Day. Even though we actually still live a few hours apart, we are meeting halfway for a little Valentine's date. I also have always loved Valentine's Day because, as I said inMonday's post, I've always liked combining red and pink but feel like I can't wear them together outside of February, so I have taken full advantage of doing so in this post against the pink wall!

Thanks for reading!
