The Monogrammed Life

Two words that have always scared me and I have dreaded...Holiday Shopping...if its something you enjoy, lets talk because that should be where your career path is headed!

I have dreaded Holiday Shopping since I was old enough to drive and buy presents myself. The line, the traffic, the "deals", the options, the returns, new store hours, more lines, and more traffic...all of it scream one at me...CHAOS!!!

And don't get me wrong, I know sometimes you can find a GREAT deal...but to those of you that got up at 3 AM this morning or never went to bed...was the one deal REALLY worth it!? To me, my sleep is MUCH more available!

So when some genius came up with "Cyber Monday" it was my saving grave with Holiday Shopping...then stores started picking it up for "Black Friday" too?!?! Oh the joys of now being able to do Holiday Shopping online!!!

So for those that are new to this concept, over slept this morning and pouting you missed "great deals", or just don't said "oh, I can get deals on holiday shopping?" her are some types for you:

1) If you want it, buy it, just like in the stores they disappear fast
2) If you think oh I can get a better deal on this in a couple weeks, don't. In a couple weeks you will be thinking why did I not just order it then?!?
3) If you want to research prices, do it before hand or start early.
4) Cover all your bases. Sign up for emails from your favorite sites, follow your favorite stores on social media, and you have 2 days until the big Cyber Monday sales hit so do a little research
5) Don't forget shipping costs! Some sites will offer free shipping over certain amounts, some have set shipping rates, and some vary based on items. Make sure you are aware of what you are dealing with, especially if you are on a budget.
6) Beware of scams. Only give up your credit card information to trusted, established sites, and don't fall prey to any fishy emails that offer too-good-to-be-true deals.
7) Don't use the same password you always use if you are making accounts.
8) Those free gifts sites are giving out? Use it to your advantage...give them as gifts to help you save money.
9) Create a list! Who you need to buy for, ideas for them, and ideas for you!
10) If you want to buy me presents, just let me know! Ill send you my address!

With Thanksgiving a mere day away there are so many things I am excited about and many more things that I am extremely thankful for. One of my favorite parts about Thanksgiving is being able to be surrounded by the people that I love. I am so thankful for my family and everything they do for me every day. Being able to share that with them makes Thanksgiving even more special. But let's be honest here, I am overly excited about the Thanksgiving food we will be cooking and enjoying as well! I have a few Thanksgiving favorites that are always required in our household for Thanksgiving or I might throw a fit. Seeing as I am no chef it is a feat that I a) have recipes for these b) can actually make these 100% on my own. GO ME!!!
{one}
Sweet Potato Casserole
I am a sweet potato lover through and through! Add some more sweet marshmallows to it and you've won me over! This may just win the spot for my favorite Thanksgiving side....along with the fact that it's simple to make!
Here's what you'll need...
- 5-6 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons orange juice
- 1 package of miniature marshmallows
Set the oven to 350 degrees
Once you have boiled the sweet potatoes for approximately 15 minutes, drain the water. Once this is done mash in the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and orange juice. Be sure it is all mixed in together. Then, spread it evenly into a greased pan (we use 9x13). Top it with marshmallows. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes (or until the marshmallows are golden brown).
{two}
Pumpkin Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
Let it be known that I love anything and everything pumpkin. So, when I saw this recipe on Pinterest I knew I had to add this to our Thanksgiving menu. No ifs, ands, or buts about it! I made it for the first time last year and it was a huge hit with my family! it was the perfect after dinner dessert.
Here's what you'll need.....
- 1 package of plain spice cake mix
- 1 package of vanilla instant pudding
- 1 cup pumpkin (I just buy the canned pumpkin)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- Cream cheese icing (I bought vs. making it last year!)
set oven to 350 degrees.
Place the cake mix, pudding mix, pumpkin, oil, water, eggs, cinnamon, and ginger in a large mixing bowl. Blend with an electric mixer on high speed for two minutes.  The batter should look thick and well blended. Pour the batter into a lightly greased pan and let it bake for 32-35 minutes.  Once the cake has cooled frost with cream cheese frosting.

{three}
Green Beans with Vinaigrette
Now I will be the first to tell you I'm not the biggest fan of greens...of any kind, but I love crispy French green beans! These are a great green side for Thanksgiving.

Here's what you'll need.....

- 2lbs. French green beans with the stems cut
- 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon of coarse salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

You will need to steam the green beans for approximately 8 minutes, then place in ice water to cool. While they are cooling mix all of the other ingredients together in a bowl. Once the green beans are cooled pour the mixture over the beans. I eat mine warm, so I heat mine before serving.

Those are some of my favorite (and easy) Thanksgiving recipes! If you're still looking for that extra side dish or dessert I highly recommend these to you!
Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving!

Sometimes, you just don't want to put on real clothes. Sometimes, the comfier the better. This is certainly my "go-to" outfit for those days, where I just want to be warm and couldn't care less about my hair (hence the baseball cap).

What do y'all wear on those "just don't care" days?

xoxo Savannah

cant live without...

Everyone has their list of "can't live withouts." They're those items that you feel "lost" or "naked" without. My list varies from time to time, but my daily items are pretty much the same.  Here are the items I can't live without right now!
I think the iPhone is on everyone's "can't live without list!" My iPhone wakes me up, it allows me to catch up on social media and emails in the morning, and reminds me of appointments throughout the day. I have been known to turn around on my way to work when I've realized I forgot it! It pretty much holds my life in it.
Mascara is something I don't leave the house without whatsoever. If nothing else, I will always, always, always brush some mascara on my lashes! It helps me feel (and look) more awake! My current favorite is Lights, Camera, Lashes! by Tarte.
Each morning I start my day off with caffeine. I drink coffee whether it's from my Keurig (loving the cinnamon roll and pumpkin spice k-cups) or going to the Starbucks drive through. Typically around mid-day I am getting that 2 o'clock feeling and I sip on a Diet Coke to get me through the rest of the day!
I love lotion. I keep some in every bathroom, the kitchen, in my purse, and one on my desk at work. I love having soft skin and hands (nothing is worse than shaking hands with someone who has "sand paper hands!") I love the smell of this Bath & Body Works lotion (it smells so fresh!)
Candles are so soothing and calming. Capri Blue Volcano candle has been my candle of choice for quite some time. It has such a clean smell, you can't help but love it! Anytime I am stressed or just need to relax a bit I light this candle. Capri blue also offers a ton of other great smelling candles. hint: they all make your house smell like Anthropologie!
I have a confession: I love chapstick. You could even go as far as saying I am a chapstick hoarder! I feel like I am constantly putting on chapstick. At any given time there is one within arms reach. I even sleep with one under my pillow (not even kidding!) This chapstick from Nivea is my go-to!
From a young age I was always going around snapping pictures. Every few years I would get an updated camera. For my graduation from college I received the Canon Rebel t3i and I don't think I have put it down ever since. This camera is perfect for my needs (and much, much more!)
Between working a full time job and blogging I like to keep my planner organized, colorfully of course! I use Steadtler pens to write my appointments, ideas, and notes with! They are a fine tip pen and write so well!
Dry Shampoo is a gift from the hair God's. I can't tell you how many mornings I've been running late or had a bad hair day and immediately grabbed dry shampoo for a quick and easy fix. I love Suave's dry shampoo. It is cheap (under $3!) and it works really well!
Brian and I try to run a few times a week now, so having a good pair of running shoes is necessary. I have always loved Asics so my most recent pair were the Asics Gel-Noosa Tri 8 running shoes. They have the perfect amount of cushion and support for my feet! The fact that they are pretty doesn't hurt either!

What are your "can't live without" items?

Additional Sale Information and Disclaimer:
During the Black Friday Preview sale, we will have a select number of items available at lower prices.  All items are valid for the free gift promotion even if they are not on sale. We do not know what date your Black Friday order will ship by for sure, but we know it will be delivered in time for Santa. We do not suggest shipping any packages to college dorms since it is not likely your order will arrive with production time and transit time before you leave to go home for exams unless you pay the rush fee.

When do you need to order by to get items for Christmas? We have no idea. That is the truth! It will totally depend on how many people take advantage of the November Sales an Specials like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. If we have the traffic we are hoping for, the last day to order for Christmas could be as early as December 2nd (Cyber Monday). It could be before then, it could be after... we won't know until we get closer to the date. We will not post a warning for this because when we realize we are at capacity, that is all we can do! One thing we can estimate is that if you want to receive your items in plenty of time, in the size and color of your choice, and without holiday fees, you need to place the order in November. We have doubled our staff and capacity to allow for holiday orders, but there are only 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week. We are upset with the turkeys this year since Thanksgiving is one week closer to Christmas than last year was, so we expect a larger volume of orders in a shorter amount of time. This means we have a whole less week to ship! eeeeekkk! So help us out and take advantage of the early sales in November!

Something that's really been on my mind lately is my hair. Over the summer I washed it everyday or every other because I had so much time on my hands and could shower whenever it was convenient. Now that I am in the midst of my sophomore year of high school, time is much more limited so showering has worked its way down to the bottom of my to-do list. I try to wash my hair every other day but to be honest, there isn't always time with sports and homework. And since you all have busy schedules as well, I have come up with 3 quick and easy hair do's that are perfect for those dreaded no time/ dirty hair mornings!

:: one ::
the donut bun
I'm not going to lie... I still have yet to master the infamous donut bun that seems to be pictured on almost everyone's blogs. I purchased a donut bun for very cheap at h&m and am having a little trouble with it but if I really sat down and played with it, I bet it wouldn't be too hard. (Here's a video I found on how to master the donut bun. Skip to 2:44!)

:: two ::
braided ponytail
I looove the look of a braided ponytail. It looks like you put in a lot of effort even if it took you 5 seconds to do! My favorites are the fishtail (see tutorial here) and the basic braid.

:: three ::
knotted pony
Lastly, I love a great knotted pony. Similar to a braid, it looks like you put in a ton of effort to your do. Simply pull your hair into a pony tail with an elastic. Then, take a skinny piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic that is holding up your ponytail. Finally, hold the knotted piece in place by putting a clear elastic on top or by securing it with a bobby pin underneath the original elastic. Very easy!

I hope you enjoyed these 3 quick ideas and try them out!
Do you have any other ideas for quick hair styles for the morning?
xoxo,
cYa

Since losing my dad a few years ago, I've become a firm, and I mean firm, believer that everything happens for a reason. As cliche as it may sound and as much as some of you may or may not believe it, it's true.

I'm also a believer in the perfect timing.

You may remember back in May I quit my job of 4 years in the alternative healthcare industry to join an innovative startup company in the healthcare technology field. (If you don't remember, I'll forgive you...just go with it.)

Well...a short 5 months have come and gone and lo and behold, I recently received a little phone call from my old company regarding a "quick meeting" and what I soon found out to be, the job offer of my dreams.

Not that I've hated or regretted my decision to join the startup company, because in the quick 5 months I've been here I've already learned SO much that I would have never learned about my old/new company, but I started to find myself considering it a "just a job", and not a career. I didn't hate it, but then again, I didn't love it and if you know me, you know it's incredibly uncharacteristic of me to not eat, sleep and breathe my career.

Something inside me always told me I'd be back at my old company. Something inside me missed doing what I was so incredibly passionate about. So that something inside me told me to swallow my pride and go back home; go back to my roots...where I bleed natural approaches to health, wellness, nutrition and fitness...where I thrive in such a creative, intelligent environment and where the culture just suits me to the core.

Leaving a company is never easy, whether you've been there 4 years or 5 months. Trust me, I've turned in resignation letters not once, but twice, this year alone and it hasn't been fun. Trust me, if I could ever figure out a way to avoid the utter awkward feeling that follows the day you turn in your notice, I would...

I don't even know if this is even making sense but what I, personally, have learned throughout all of this is the simple fact that no matter where you work, you're going to put up with things you don't necessarily love. There are going to be projects you hate, decisions you think are dumber than the invention of the shake weight, rules you disagree with, people you don't necessarily "click" with, situations that make you incredibly uncomfortable and just certain things that really press your buttons. So...if you're going to put up with stressful projects, decisions that don't make sense to you, the inevitable "company rules, regulations and procedures", people who may not be your best friend or downright awkward situations, you might as well do it with a company and within an industry that you're most passionate about.

What I've also learned, what I hope I can continue to remind myself  years from now and if there is anything you take from all of this...is the fact that there is no amount of money that can pay you to do something you're not happy doing. At least not me, anyways.

I hope this inspires those of you who are out there getting paid just get paid.

Get out there and do what you can't help but love.
Do what you're passionate about.
Do what you're obsessed with.
Do something that excites you.
Do something that fuels your inner fire.
And when you do, do it with all of your heart.

So there. I took the leap, I explored other opportunities but it's time to return to what I love most.

Oh, and if there's one more thing you take from this today, let it be that you will always, always, leave a company on really good terms. ;)

And that's all the wisdom I have for today. Cheers to following your heart, finding your passion and second chances!

When you put on your monogram this morning did you remember why we are able to?

If you don't already know today is Veteran's Day. Veterans Day is an official United States holiday which honors people who have served in armed service also known as Veterans.

We here at Marley Lilly love to support the great nation we come from by none other than Monogramming it!

So put on some 'Merica Gear, Thank a Veteran, and Remember We are the Land of the Free, Because of the Brave.
