The Monogrammed Life

Anna Kristine cashmere poncho (c/o) / white jeans / gem sandals (similar)
/ monogrammed crossbody (c/o) / Ray Ban clubmasters

Whenever I think of my mom's wardrobe, the first thing that comes into mind is her wide array of chic ponchos and wraps. She has them in tons of different shades from hot pink to black and white color block to gray to navy; we both agree that they are the perfect piece for nearly every season of the year. I had never tried one on until recently because I thought ponchos were a bit mature for me, but I quickly fell in love with how soft and cozy it is! I am obsessed with blankets (chances are I'll have one wrapped around me if you ever walk into my house), and this is like a cashmere blanket you can wear in public! Whether you wear one with white jeans and Jack Rogers for a bonfire on the beach in summer or with leggings and booties for running errands in the fall, you can style these ponchos in so many different ways and they're truly one of the most versatile pieces you can have in your wardrobe. They're seriously perfect for everyone and their mothers. That being said, what better Mother's Day gift than a cashmere poncho in a fun color? Anna Kristine has the most beautiful plethora of cashmere wraps and ponchos and I highly recommend checking them out! My mom (or G as I like to call her) buys the majority of her ponchos from this boutique and they're such great quality.

Are you a fan of ponchos?

Oh AP season... One of the most dreaded weeks of the school year! As much as I dislike Advanced Placement tests, I'm lucky to be going to a college where you can get credit for certain AP scores, so I'm more motivated to do well on them. Since multiple choice and standardized tests in general are definitely not my strong suits I really have to study a lot to do well on them. I've come to find what does and doesn't work for me when it comes to studying, so I wrote up a little guide on how I prepare for AP exams below!

+ Invest in a study book
These don't always make sense to use for every AP, but in general, buying the AP study book for your class can give you a great outline of all the material you have to know. AP US History, for example, had so many decades of events you have to be familiar with, so having summaries of everything in one book is very helpful! Take a chapter a day and read through it, highlight it, and make flashcards with the important terms.

+ Utilize Quizlet
I cannot even begin to describe how much I love Quizlet. If you haven't heard of it (I really don't know how you've survived high school), it's basically an online collection of flashcards that you can make and then practice. You can also play games and take practice tests with all of your terms which can actually make studying sort of fun!

+ Chunk out your studying
There's no way I could ever sit the day before an exam and crank out all the terms I need to know. Instead, I find studying in one or two hour long chunks is much more beneficial. Not only do I pay more attention but it also helps me remember things better so I come back later and re-review them again.

+ Have yummy + healthy snacks
Snacking is one of the few things that makes studying tolerable, so I like to stock up on some different things. My all-time favorite snack is Skinny Pop popcorn because it's light, salty and guilt free - aka the perfect thing to indulge in while reviewing. They just launched two new delicious flavors (dusted dark chocolate and jalapeño) and I'm already addicted. Sometimes it's nice to try something a little more special than the original plain flavor, and the dusted dark chocolate is especially amazing because it is like a much healthier version of a chocolate dessert! True story: I keep a bag of popcorn next to my desk at all times in case I get hungry :)

+ Switch up your study location
I don't know about you, but I need to mix up where I study so I don't get bored. Try studying with a friend at a coffee shop, then in your bedroom at your desk, then at your kitchen table, the library, etc. A change of both pace and scenery is always nice when you have a lot to do!

Thanks to Skinny Pop for sponsoring this post!

This post may be a tad late, as we're well under way with our spring and summer is quickly approaching. But if most of you are like me, you probably keep putting off that spring cleaning you know is necessary but have been dreading.

So this past weekend I finally bit the bullet and deep cleaned my entire apartment, closets and drawers. A huge pile is waiting in my living room to be hauled off to Goodwill. So if anyone wants to help a sister out, I can gladly spot you a free lunch or dinner. Just saying!

Any who, while I was cleaning I realized there were some super easy tips + tricks that helped me speed along the process. As well as some awesome home cleaning tools I've found that y'all may want to try.Like the vacuum that turned me from dreading to do it, to someone who secretly creates messes just so she can use her vacuum. Am I sharing too much, ha?! Whoops!

Here are some of my tips for apartment spring cleaning. And I say apartment, because that's all I have lived in for the past eight years. I also know that's what many of you own or live in. So, here we go:

1. One space at a time
  • Sometimes I have found myself cleaning one window here and then walking to the kitchen and unloading the dishwasher, then stepping into the living room to tidy up the coffee table. All the while, leaving so many tasks unfinished. Then I find myself redoing most of them and wasting time.
  • Instead, section off your apartment in spaces. Bathroom, bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc.
  • This way you are feeling like you've accomplished something and don't allow yourself to get distracted.
  • Also, create a list of everything you need to do and hang it on your fridge. Even the smallest tasks like taking out the trash. By seeing what you have left to do and crossing off each completed task, you'll continue your motivation long past cleaning your tub.

2. Start with the longest (most tedious) tasks first
  • I usually start with the tasks that will take the longest. Why? Because I'm usually most productive  and motivated when I first start cleaning.
  • Also, if you aren't able to get all of your tasks done, I've found it's easier to put off the harder and more time consuming tasks. By leaving the smaller to-dos if necessary, you're more apt to get them done at a later time.
  • For me, this is usually my bathroom. Between cleaning the tub, sink and other areas, it can be the most time consuming part of my apartment to clean. So by tackling this room first, I'm ensuring that it definitely gets done. And if it's the only space in my apartment I get cleaned at that time, I leave feeling accomplished that the hardest room is complete.

3. Take everything out of the closet... yes, everything.
  • If you're switching over your closet from winter to spring, or right now probably spring and summer, it's good to start with a clean slate.
  • Take everything out. Even the shoes.
  • Vacuum out your entire closet and wipe down the walls and shelves.
  • Starting with a clean slate allows you the opportunity to go through your clothes to see what you should start getting rid of. Or bonus, you may find items that you forgot about!
  • Try to organize what you'll actually wear, in your line of sight / on the shelves that are easier to reach. So items you won't be wearing now need to go to the back of your closet or higher up. By making sure you have easy access to what you actually wear, you'll save yourself time later on.
  • Take clothes that have been in storage and either steam/iron before putting in your closet. Trust me, you'll thank me later when you're in a hurry and want to wear that new polyester dress but don't have time to iron! You'll probably have to touch it up, but it won't be nearly as wrinkled.
  • Use wood hangers so your clothes won't wrinkle or rub. I tend to use wood hangers so it helps space everything out. Wood hangers also help prolong the lifetime of your clothing. Plus, they're pretty too!
  • Store clothing you wont be wearing at all, but don't want to get rid of. For me, I store all of this in my hall closet in bins and on the hanging racks in bags.
  • Sell whatever you don't need or wont wear on Poshmark.

4. Create piles
  • While you're cleaning you're bound to come across things you no longer need, can't sell or want to just toss all together. So in my living room floor I create three piles (since this is the last room I clean). One to give away, one to toss and one to sell. This helps keep everything in once place and organized.
  • Toss what can't be sold.
  • Get rid of items you haven't used in years. A few weeks ago I finally let go of all of my college notebooks, sorority handbooks, etc. Those things just clutter up drawers and let's face it, you'll never need them again. Obviously keep a few mementos as special keepsakes, but those notes from freshmen year biology? Toss!

5. Take the garbage out last + maintenance requests
  • Instead of taking thirty trips to the trash room, pile all of your garbage by your front door or outside the door. Then at the very end you can take it all out at once in far less trips. It also keeps you from stopping and starting so many tasks. Saving time is key!
  • Vacuum last. Since you'll likely be walking around all of the rooms while cleaning, even once a room is technically finished, wait to vacuum at the very end. That way you can go back over all of your tracks and finish off the entire spring cleaning in one neat note!
  • Don't forget the smaller, less noticeable areas. Like your baseboards, behind furniture and underneath the couch. Ask a friend or roommate to help you move furniture if necessary. But dust can easily accumulate in this hidden areas, and they're most of the time overlooked.
  • If you come across any maintenance requests like blown out lights, air filters that need to be changed, or windows that need to be cleaned on the outside, make a compiled list to leave with your building concierge or maintenance man.
  • Don't be afraid to ask your building to repaint a faded wall, replace that ridiculously slow fridge, or clean your carpet. You have LOTS of rights as a renter, and if you don't ask, sometimes you won't receive. In my last apartment I got the entire carpet cleaned for FREE simply by asking.
  • I also like to finish off a clean apartment with fresh flowers. I add a vase on my coffee table and on my nightstand in my room.

I also want to brag on this vacuum for a second.

When my insanely large vacuum blew up last year… yes, blew up. The front part literally blew off. I decided it was time in invest in a good quality vacuum. I wanted one that wasn't super bulky, was less than $200 and was a two-in-one. I did a ton of research and found one from Target that was less than $190. You can even get it cheaper when Target has their home sales. I got mine for $130!!

The Shark Rocket is a two-in-one vacuum and I will never use anything else. I love having the detachable handheld vacuum for quick pickups and the long stem addition to get under the couch and furniture. It's literally the best "adult" purchase I've ever made and I can't say enough good things about it. I literally "create" messes just so I can use this thing. It's that amazing.

What are some of your favorite tools for cleaning an apartment or home?

Bag: 88 ℅     Oxford: J. Crew   Shoes: J. Crew Factory (similar)     Skirt: J. Crew     Belt: H&M     Bracelet: Kristine Lily ℅    Sunglasses: Polette ℅ (similar)

This outfit is actually a bit of a throwback to this one from last winter.  I'm one of those people who wears plaid year round, even if it's typically relegated to winter wear, like tartan.  Green isn't a color that I have a lot of in my closet, but definitely one of my favorites.  It pairs very well with classic notes of cognac, and I added on these vegan patent black bow flats for some contrast.

I always love sharing my favorite vegan brands on LMHC, especially when they are compassionate towards animals, people, and the planet.  One of my new favorite lines is 88 Handbags, an amazing brand with gorgeous, inexpensive, and ethically produced pieces.  They're all about sustainability, using eco-friendly polyurethane and striving to use the most environmentally conscious materials rather than the cheapest ones.  They also work hard to ensure that their bags are ethically produced with animal and human rights in mind.  On top of all that, 88 donates a percentage of their sales to charities that work to educate women around the world.

I'm wearing one of my favorites from the line, the Zoe Walnut Woven Crossbody.  It can be worn as a clutch too, and it also comes in a gorgeous grey shade.  When this bag first arrived, I'll admit that I was stunned with the amazing quality of the bag, especially since it's $35!  You can really see the effort they put into finding the quality materials reflected in the piece.  This bag also hold a lot more that it appears to- there's a full sized wallet, a phone, two lipsticks, and a mini water bottle in there!

With your purchase of $49+, you can use the coupon code LittleMiss to receive a free wallet with your bag, valid until May 4.  Additionally, if you sign up for their newsletter, you will be entered into a bag giveaway.  I think it's so important to feel good about what you're wearing, and 88 is really a company that I'm proud to be supporting and sharing on this blog.  A good brand starts with good practices and ends with giving back, and that's the most important thing of all- fashion with compassion.

When I went vegan, I ended up throwing out and giving aways a lot of my cosmetics.  There's a few factors to consider about makeup and finding ones that are vegan friendly.  I got rid of my products that were:

Tested on Animals.  Many large makeup, skincare, and beauty brands test on animals.  If they manufacture in China, they are actually required by law to test on animals.  Cosmetic testing on animals can often result in burns, injury, infection or even the animal's death (estimated 100 million+ animals are killed in animal testing each year.  I know, that's a huge number, definitely more than I ever expected to learn.)  There are a multitude of non-animal testing options that are safer and readily available for beauty companies to test their products on, yet most continue to animal test because of the cheap manufacturing and testing cost.  Many brands have eschewed their animal testing in favor of cruelty-free practices, but some brands such as Maybelline, MAC, L'Oreal, Aveeno, Dove, and more still test on animals.

Animal Ingredients.  Many commercial makeup products use animal ingredients that most people don't even think about.  Substances like carmine (crushed beetles, used to pigment lipstick and blush), tallow (rendered animal fat, used in foundations, eye makeup, etc.), estrogen (used in restorative creams and perfumes), and beeswax (in lipstick) are commonly used, just to name a few.

These are my new favorite products in my makeup bag.  Not only are they animal friendly, but they are amazing quality!  I admit, there are some crappy products out there, many that I've unfortunately wasted my money on, but these are the cream of the vegan crop.

Pacifica is my new favorite brand.   Their 100% vegan cosmetics are readily available at Target, and work so wonderfully.  Their Power of Love lipsticks go on smoothly, apply even pigment, and last forever (you only need to reapply after meals).  I have Compassion Passion and my favorite, Super Love.

I also love their Stellar Gaze mascara- it provides a ton of volume and noticeable nourishment to the lashes with vitamins and mineral to keep them soft and strong.  It also features a vegan brush! Their Indian Coconut Nectar Body Butter is extremely hydrating, and gentle enough for my sensitive skin.  I'm in love with the scent- so much that I had to get the Indian Coconut Nectar perfume rollerball.  The Color Quench Lip Tints are great for smoothing onto chapped lips for a hint of color and shimmer.  I love throwing them in my bag.

On the back of Pacifica packagings, they are stamped with a "100% vegan" certification and the PETA cruelty-free bunny logo.  Their ingredient list also is starred to indicate that the ingredients come from a plant source.

Look for the Leaping Bunny logo, PETA's Cruelty Free bunny, or the CCF Rabbit on cosmetics to certify them as 100% vegan.  Some products might not have these vegan symbols, just as some vegan food products don't have the certified vegan stamp (like Oreos, for example!)

Urban Decay is awesome for high-end vegan makeup.  They have an entire section on their website of vegan cosmetics, and this Sheer Revolution lipstick is one of my favorites.  This Sprout's Vegan Lip Balm is my new go-to.  I love the coconut scent, and it's incredibly nourishing.  It was only $1 at Sprout's Farmer's Market.

E.L.F. is just about the cheapest you can get- their starts at $1!  They went fully vegan, using no animal hairs or furs in their brushes or ingredients in their makeup.  They were already a favorite before I went vegan because of their amazing prices and good quality products, but now I love them even more.

Here's a video that I posted on my Youtube!  It's short (less than a minute).  I did post a little disclosure in the caption section because I was misinformed about one of the products in there from Origins.  But hey, everyone makes mistakes!

Hope you enjoyed this post!  I'll probably be doing more in the future like this as I find new vegan makeup staples to share.

Here we are... just a few short weeks from the end of the school year and I realized I haven't shared much about my room with you yet! My roommate and I ended up having similar styles, so our room is pretty put together and we have gotten endless compliments from strangers walking down the hall saying they liked it. For the sake of my roommates privacy, I didn't photograph her bed/desk area or closet. But you can see that her bed is lofted even higher than mine, and it is on the other side of my desk.

First off, I live in a dorm that is suite style, which I definitely prefer! Then I share my side of the suite with my roommate, who is one of my best friends at school.

If you walk into our room and turn right, my bed is right there. I have my bed lofted with my dresser underneath, as well as my beanbag!

And above my bed I hung a string and used tiny clothes pins to hang pictures. I made all of mine black and white so they would look better together, and I love the way it turned out!

If you turn left when you walk in, you would find my closet. Our closets actually fit a decent amount of clothes, and the shelves at the top are very helpful!

On the wall right beside my closet I keep my necklaces, as well as an occasional hat! (Click here to see how I style my monogrammed baseball hat!)

In the bottom of my closet I keep my laundry bag, suitcase, box with shoes I don't wear as often and bags I don't use often, as well as my Hunters!

Then next to my bed is my desk. I don't usually sit at my desk to do homework, but I do use it for a little bit each day.

I like to hang up cards and postcards as decorations on the board on my desk! I found that it also makes a great place to hang keys or headphones as well.

Here is a closer look at what I keep above my desk. You might remember the adventurers print from this post, or the work hard stay humble print from this post. And last summer I made this canvas to match my bedspread!

Then on the other side of the room, we have our "living area" with the chair, lamp, and ottoman. We also have window clings that we change every month or so depending on the holiday, and you can see the paintings we have!

A closer look at some of our wall art. The only one I made is the Dorm Sweet Dorm painting on the right!

Then if you move left from the chair, we have the door to our bathroom, and then a set of shelves on the other side of that. Our shelves are not always the most organized and photo worthy parts of the room, but I wanted to show you one of mine.

We also have our cactus, Jamal. We came up with his name in a series of unfortunate events, and it just kind of stuck. He even has his own name badge. And we have Phyllis, Willis, and Danny next to Jamal, who we made at a craft night a few months back.

Last but certainly not least, we have our favorite rug from Target! We bought this a week into school because lets be honest, dorm carpet is not soft. Now I sit on this rug to do homework, and it helps brighten up the room!

That is all for this post, but if you would like to see more college/dorm related posts, please let me know in the comments!
