DIY: Dream Closet Makeover

by - Wednesday, June 11, 2014

In the words of Carrie Bradshaw, I like my money right where I can see it - in my closet. I recently moved away from my college apartment, and, unfortunately, wasn't able to bring my large work space and desk with me. At my new place of residence, I don't really have an area where I could set up a space to work…except for my exceptionally large walk-in closet.

After seeing that Cupcakes and Cashmere's home office housed a rack of clothing, I was inspired to  my create my dream work space…with my clothes (because why work if I can't see where my money goes ;p). My clothes weren't taking up very much space in the closet, why waste valuable real estate? I love that my closet has a large window so I believed this would be a prime opportunity to make this little space my own.

Now I have an office in my closet. This is seriously my dream closet! I'm surrounded by things that inspire me the most - fashion, make up, and a great view!

Previously, the closet walls were a blank canvas. I chose to paint three of the walls a yellowish eggshell color to add a little bit of color that wouldn't compete with the colors of clothing. The wall holding in the window was painted a shade called "Raleigh Peach" by Benjamin Moore. This is the same color of the walls in my bedroom so it creates a nice flow from the bedroom to the closet.

Living five minutes away from a flea market is wonderful (though my wallet disagrees). I found a very basic wood table for an extremely reasonable price, sanded it down, and painted it up. Also,  I found this chair hiding in the basement! It looked pretty awful before but it had good structure. After sanding and painting, I reupholstered the seat cushion with a Vera Bradley-esque quilting fabric I found at JoAnn Fabric. The end result of both pieces is gorgeous! I'll post before and after photos of the furniture later this week.

I also found lots of beautiful glassware at the flea market and in the basement. I just love the scallop edges on the bowls! So girly! I love the base of this lamp as well, though I'm having a difficult time finding a lamp shade!

I didn't know what to do with this wire rack before so I just had it hiding in the corner. It was holding knick knacks and jewelry that I was too lazy to put back. Definitely awkward placement. After doing some rearranging, I thought, why not display my shoes!? It's the closet I'll ever get to having a wall of shoes, haha!

I love displaying the beautiful gifts that my sorority little sisters have made me over the past few years. Little Emma painted the pink canvas that features The Darling Daily's "High Heels, High Standards, Pearls Everyday" motto with pearl corners. Little Emily made me two little jewelry trays and the gold vase. One tray is on the desk and the other is right by the gold vase. Little Tricia made the chevron shadow box but left it empty so I could fill it with memories. Obviously, I'm behind in getting photos printed.

Overall, it was a very fun project that look all of three days and under $100!

What would your dream closet look like, Darling?
